Loftia Multiplayer and Servers Explained

Quick answer: Loftia is always online, never locked to a server, and fully playable solo. Only players on the same server can play together, but the developers state you are not locked to any server, so you can join your friends whenever you want. Playing alone will not block your progress, and solo players still get almost all of the content. Measured on October 22, 2026, the Next Fest demo ran 2,616 concurrent players at 11:19 UTC and 2,861 an hour later, against a festival-week peak of 3,821. Server physical locations, and the region list, have never been published.

  • Always online on every platform, with no offline mode (official FAQ).
  • No server lock-in: same server as your friend to play together, but you can move servers to meet them.
  • Solo play does not block progression and gives you access to almost all content.
  • Player cap per server: not disclosed. Cross-platform play: under evaluation, not confirmed. Demo scale on October 22, 2026: 2,616 to 2,861 concurrent, 221 reviews, Steam label "Very Positive".

What the official FAQ actually says about servers

Official source: Loftia FAQ - Does Loftia have servers?

The answer: "Like all MMOs, Loftia will have servers to accommodate a large number of players at the same time. Only players on the same server will be able to play together, but you will not be locked to any server, so you can join your friends whenever you want."

Two promises hide in it: shared play needs a shared server, but the server is not your address, so you can join friends whenever you want.

Question What the developers have said Status
Do we need the same server? "Only players on the same server will be able to play together" Confirmed
Am I locked to one server? "You will not be locked to any server" Confirmed
Cross-platform co-op? "something we're aiming for ... we can't promise it just yet" Under evaluation
Server and region locations Nothing official Not announced

Why MMO lock-in is the wrong mental model

Steam's store metadata lists Loftia under Multi-player, MMO, Co-op and Online Co-op, and the Steam store page repeats the same, which is where the misleading comparisons come from: a classic MMO asks you to pick a server and live there. The developers call it an MMO "though, since we are a small indie studio, we like to think of ourselves as more of a 'Mediumly Multiplayer Online' game", and the server is a place you visit, not a character you choose.

Solo play does not block progression

The second FAQ answer is the one that matters for solo players: "Loftia can be enjoyed both solo, and together with others - it's completely up to you! Playing alone will not block your progress in the game, and you'll still be able to enjoy almost all of the content as everybody else."

Read it precisely: progress is never blocked and solo players get almost all content. The developers never itemised the exception, so no official source says what sits behind that "almost".

Activity Solo play Group play
Quests, proficiencies, collections Fully available Fully available
World Projects Shared by definition; the demo's first one is Pebble's birthday party Same, with more helpers
Group puzzle adventures Framed as group activities by the demo announcement Intended format
Play solo if you like, but do the demo with a friend before October 26

The demo rewards are built around company. One friend unlocks the Pebble Chair and two the Pebble Couch, on top of the Demo Banner you get for joining the Player Neighborhood in the demo's first ten minutes. Progress and your character name carry over into Early Access, so a short session with a friend is not wasted time. See the Loftia Demo Progress and What Carries Over guide.

Always online: there is no offline mode anywhere

The third FAQ answer is blunt: "Loftia is an MMO game, where you will need to be online to play, no matter what platform you are playing on." There is no offline fallback when your connection drops, and no single-player mode that runs without one.

Platform Online required Subscription to play
Windows PC (Steam) Yes None, buy-to-play
Mac, Apple Silicon only Yes None, buy-to-play
Steam Deck Yes None, buy-to-play
Epic Games Store Yes None, buy-to-play
Nintendo Switch, 2027 Yes Nintendo Switch Online, $20 per year in the US
Two different subscription questions come up constantly

Loftia itself has no subscription: the developers say "Loftia has no subscription to play", and the base price is $29.99 in the US, $24.89 with the launch discount. The only subscription that ever applies is Nintendo's own, for the Switch version in 2027. The Loftia Platforms and Crossplay Status guide covers the platform list.

How many players can you play with?

The FAQ gives no cap: "you'll be able to play with as many friends as you'd like!" No official source lists server capacity or a server list, so any quoted number is a guess.

Measure Value Measured at
Demo concurrent players 2,616 October 22, 2026, 11:19 UTC
Demo concurrent players, re-measured 2,861 October 22, 2026, 12:19 UTC
Next Fest peak concurrent players 3,821 Festival week, October 19 to 26, 2026
Demo reviews 221 total, 178 positive and 43 negative October 22, 2026, 12:19 UTC

The peak is the number for scale, the two October 22 readings are the honest picture of that day, and the gap shows how fast a festival crowd thins. None of it predicts the Early Access population on November 3.

Where the servers are: region selection exists, locations unannounced

The official known issues list, updated October 21, 2026, has a Gamepad entry called "Login Screen Server Selection": "The Select Region Button isn't highlighting correctly when selected with a Gamepad, but will function." The demo login screen does offer a region choice; the only problem is a highlight bug with a controller. The official site has never listed the regions, data centre locations, or server capacity.

Server detail Known Not announced
Region selection at the login screen Yes, per the official known issues list Which regions are offered
Region selection with a controller It functions, the highlight is buggy Full controller parity in menus
Server capacity, data centre locations Nothing official Player cap, physical locations

Multiplayer in the demo: what worked and what broke

The official demo page lists six things: Farming, Decorating, Sharing, Salvaging, Adventures, Social. The Steam launch announcement adds the multiplayer detail: group up for Adventures to solve group puzzles, play social minigames, and take part in World Projects where the server works toward a shared goal.

Two multiplayer bugs were on the official list as of October 21, 2026. Group housing is the serious one: "Groups crashing when travelling to player islands - we're investigating issues with group housing servers not allocating correctly leading to crashes." The second is cosmetic: chat notification sounds "currently play globally rather than being affected by distance from the player".

Player reports are mixed, and they are community reports, not official statements. One reviewer wrote that "the servers are holding well honestly, I haven't had any connection problem", while a French-language review says "impossible de s y connecter", and others describe lag when loading.

Playing with friends before Early Access opens

The demo runs October 19 to 26, 2026, and Early Access opens on November 3, 2026 at 1pm EST, 2am on November 4 in China. Worth doing while the demo is live:

  • Create your character now. Only one character per account is allowed in the demo; more become possible after Early Access.
  • Link your loftia.gg account in game with your email address. Without it, the developers cannot recover any rewards or progress made during the demo.
  • Invite friends rather than playing alone: one friend unlocks the Pebble Chair, two the Pebble Couch, and the Demo Banner comes with entering the Player Neighborhood.
  • Expect a busy world. Around 2,600 to 2,900 people were in the demo on October 22, 2026. Patch notes and server downtime notices land on the official site and the official Discord.

House sharing has its own guide in Loftia House Showcase and Sharing Your Home, and the shared-goal system in Loftia World Projects: How Community Builds Work.

FAQ

Can I play Loftia with a friend who is on a different server? No. Only players on the same server can play together. What you can do is move to your friend's server, because you are not locked to any server.

Does Loftia have offline mode? No. You need to be online to play on any platform, with no offline fallback anywhere, including on the Switch version planned for 2027.

Is Loftia a co-op game or a solo game? Both. It is a persistent world you can play entirely on your own, and the official answer is that playing alone never blocks your progress and gives almost all the content.

How many players can be on one Loftia server? Not disclosed. The FAQ never gives a cap, and no official source lists server capacity or the number of servers.

Can I play with friends on Steam and on Epic at the same time? Not yet. Cross-play is something the developers are aiming for, they are still researching and testing, and they cannot promise it. Each platform needs its own purchase.
