Loftia Farming Basics: Solarpunk Growing Methods

How Loftia farming works: hydroponics, aquaponics and trellis growing, the four hydroponic factors, and what the demo lets you plant.

Loftia Farming Basics: Solarpunk Growing Methods

Quick answer: Loftia has three named growing methods — hydroponics, aquaponics and trellis farming — and the tools you craft run on renewable energy from sun, wind and rain. Hydroponics is the only one with a published mechanic: you control four factors (water, oxygen, nutrients and light) to affect crop yield, and the team introduced 10 basic plus 5 exotic crops for it in the November 2022 dev blog. As of the October 2026 Steam Next Fest demo (October 19–26, 2026), you buy seeds from Hazel and plant them on your own floating island; Hydroponics Stations and Super Crops arrive with Early Access on November 3, 2026. No crop list exists in official text yet.

  • Methods named officially: hydroponics, aquaponics, trellis farming.
  • Hydroponic yield responds to four factors: water, oxygen, nutrients, light.
  • Crop roster: 10 basic plus 5 exotic, then mushrooms, herbs, flowers, Bioluminescent Ivy.
  • Tools run on sun, wind and rain; farming stops at Level 5 in the demo, a demo limit.

The three growing methods the official site names

The homepage sells farming in one sentence: master sustainable farming techniques like hydroponics, aquaponics and trellis farming, and craft your own tools using renewable energy generated from the sun, wind and rain.

Method What official text says Never published
Hydroponics Homepage-named; the November 2022 blog details the four-factor mechanic and 10 basic plus 5 exotic crops, grown on hydroponic machines in a vertical layout Per-crop yield, growth time, unlock order, station cost
Aquaponics Homepage-named beside the other two Any mechanic, input, stock list or fish-plant loop in official text
Trellis farming Homepage-named as the third method Placement, support structures, best crops, cost

Three named methods is not three playable systems: the demo confirms farming inside Loftia City, and only hydroponics has a written mechanic.

Hydroponics: the four factors that decide your yield

The November 2022 Loftian Skies post is the only official text explaining how growing works: in the game you can control different factors such as water, oxygen, nutrients and light to affect the yield of your crops, and the team said they were taking their time with the detailed game design because they wanted it educational and fun.

Factor Official wording State of the numbers
Water A factor that affects crop yield No volume or refill rule published
Oxygen A factor that affects crop yield No aeration rule published
Nutrients Affects crop yield; Early Access adds Hydroponics Stations kept topped up with nutrients Units, depletion rate and price undisclosed
Light A factor that affects crop yield No light values; closest official hook is the glowing plant below
Treat the four factors as dials, not a recipe

No official numbers have been published, so any watering schedule you read elsewhere is untested until Early Access.

The clearest official link between light and the world is the Bioluminescent Ivy, revealed in February 2023: flowers modified with fungi foxfire to produce a continuous glow, in five named variations — Pom Pom Chrysanthemum, Monkey Cup, Fly Agaric Mushroom, Canterbury Bell Flower and Fuchsia — and meant as a sustainable source of light at night.

Renewable energy: sun, wind and rain

Patch notes #1 for the demo, published October 21, 2026, hold the only hard in-game energy statement: solar panels now generate more energy in rain and at night, particularly when both are happening.

Energy source Official description Published figures
Solar Panels generate energy; output increases in rain and at night, most when both overlap (patch notes #1) None
Wind Airborne turbines ride a helium or hydrogen-filled shroud, reach high-speed winds at altitude and generate more energy than ground turbines (January 2023 blog); that power runs crafting, cooking, exploration and your home None
Hydro Named by the team as another renewable form it would detail later None since
Do not plan a farm around an energy budget

The wind turbine post is a 2023 concept-stage note, and the only in-game output statement is a patch note about a relative change. Build for coverage, then measure once the servers are live.

What the demo lets you plant, and what it does not

The demo covers the Loftia City opening questline and stops before the next district: a working farm, but not the full ladder.

Farming feature In the Next Fest demo (October 19–26, 2026) At Early Access launch (November 3, 2026)
Seeding and planting Yes — seeds bought from Hazel, planted with the tool wheel Same loop, plus Hydroponics Stations
Farming proficiency Capped at Level 5, a demo limit Cap removed, and you choose which Perks to spend points in
Hydroponics Stations Not in the demo Announced for Early Access on the Early Access page: advanced growing, stations kept topped up with nutrients
Super Crops Not in the demo Announced for Early Access: a chance to grow Loftia Super Crops from a topped-up station

Two official friction points matter before your first planting. The known-issues list says that if you cannot see seeds you need for a quest or that you bought from Hazel, you can find them by holding down R to open the tool wheel and left-clicking the item from your inventory. Patch notes #1 also rewrote the tool wheel tutorial: it appears during the planting step, stays visible up to four minutes, and dismisses only when you open the wheel.

The crop roster: what is confirmed, and what is missing

The honest answer to what can I grow is a structure: the team published counts and artwork rather than names.

Name or group Status Source
Carrot seeds Named in official text Patch notes #1, October 21, 2026
Mushrooms and herbs Categories named in text, among the easiest crops on vertical farming equipment Loftian Skies, January 2023
Flowers Announced as the next crop category, strong candidates for controlled growing Loftian Skies, January 2023
Pom Pom Chrysanthemum, Monkey Cup, Fly Agaric Mushroom, Canterbury Bell Flower, Fuchsia The five Bioluminescent Ivy variations, the only plant names published in text Loftian Skies, February 2023
10 basic and 5 exotic crops Counts published, names never published — shown as artwork, with the exotic set gathered from community suggestions of exotic fruit and vegetables Loftian Skies, November 2022

The team's own framing explains the missing names. In the November 2022 post they wrote that the crops were introduced as 3D models and artwork — 10 basic and 5 exotic, the exotic set gathered from community suggestions of exotic fruit and vegetables — rather than as a written list of names.

Who runs the farm

Hazel is the Seed Shop Owner and the confirmed seed vendor, since the known-issues list names her as the source of purchased seeds. Dr. Marie, the Botanical Scientist, built Loftia's first hydroponic machine. Herb is caretaker of the Hanging Gardens, the floating island the official site describes as full of lush greenery, cozy fishing spots and community farms, coming with Early Access on November 3, 2026. The cast is in Loftia NPC and Character List (All 15); the demo's district is in Loftia City Guide: The Demo District.

A first-session planting checklist for the demo

  1. Buy seeds from Hazel in Loftia City before planting; her shop is the confirmed source.
  2. If a seed looks missing, hold down R for the tool wheel and left-click the item from your bag.
  3. Plant while the reworked tutorial prompt is up; it dismisses only when you open the wheel.
  4. Water and harvest — the pre-release Discord farming bot listed planting, buying, watering and harvesting as the core loop. Official trailer footage on the Steam store page shows a sprinkler in a tilled field.
  5. Put down a solar panel and notice it still produces after dark and in the rain.
  6. Expect farming to stop at Level 5. The cap lifts at Early Access launch on November 3, 2026, where Perks arrive.

FAQ

What crops can I plant in the Loftia demo? The roster has been published as counts, not names: 10 basic and 5 exotic from the November 2022 blog, then mushrooms and herbs, then flowers. The only crop named in official writing is carrot seeds, in the October 21, 2026 patch notes. Farming is one of the systems the official demo page lists.

Where are my seeds? If a seed you bought from Hazel or need for a quest is not showing in your inventory, hold down R for the tool wheel and left-click the item from your bag. That is the official workaround from the known-issues list.

Is hydroponics playable now or only at launch? Farming is in the demo, and hydroponics is the documented method behind it. Coming in Early Access on November 3, 2026 are the Hydroponics Stations, the advanced stations kept topped up with nutrients, and the chance for a topped-up station to grow Loftia Super Crops. Details in Loftia Hydroponics and Super Crops Explained.

Do solar panels work at night? Yes. Patch notes #1 from October 21, 2026 say solar panels now generate more energy in rain and at night, particularly when both are happening. No absolute output figures are published.

What do aquaponics and trellis farming actually do? They are two of the three methods named on the homepage. No mechanic text has been published for either, so claims about fish-to-plant loops or trellis structures are community interpretation. See Loftia Crops List: What Is Confirmed So Far.
